A little bit of real history about Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln suspended habeus corpus and imprisoned 1000's of people in the north without warrant including many newspaper men that dissented against his views.

Protectionist tariffs were levied against European goods to give the less efficient manufacturing infrastructure in the Northern states an opportunity to "compete."  Well, the south was largely still agricultural and had only two options from which to buy goods, the Northern states or Europe.

Once the tariffs were put in place, the Southern states were burdened with increasing, unaffordable prices.  Since the Union, up until that time, was voluntary, many Southern states decided to secede.  This angered Lincoln.

It led him to do the things I mentioned above, but also made him decide to use the United States military to invade the Southern states.  The bloody civil war ultimately caused the death of over 600,000 Americans.

What about the issue of slavery, you say?  There was a proposed amendment BEFORE the war was ever waged to abolish slavery.  It was already in the early stages of ending.

Why did we not follow the example of the rest of the world when abolishing slavery?  In the rest of the world, the end to slavery was a much more peaceful process.  The national governments bought the slaves and then freed them. (Lincoln suggested buying and then deporting them.)

What many historians conveniently leave out is that Lincoln said (paraphrasing):  "I could care less about the outcome of slavery.  No abolition, partial abolition, or complete abolition are all acceptable as long as the union is preserved."

Don't believe me?  The actual quote is written on the Lincoln monument.

Lincoln has been made into a god like figure.  However, I beg you to check further into history.
